Calculating Exact Age
Age is typically expressed in completed years, but exact age in months and days is useful for medical contexts, legal eligibility checks, and milestone tracking.
How Age Calculation Works
1. Subtract birth year from current year: years = Y_now - Y_birth
2. If birthday hasn't occurred yet this year: years -= 1
3. Count months from last birthday
4. Count days within current month
Example: Born 1990-03-15, Today 2026-08-20
Years = 2026-1990 = 36 (birthday passed)
Months = 5 (Mar→Aug)
Days = 5 (15th→20th)
Exact age: 36 years, 5 months, 5 days
Age in Other Units
Total days = (date_now - date_birth).days
Total months ≈ total_days / 30.44
Total hours = total_days × 24
Total seconds = total_days × 86,400
36 years ≈ 13,149 days ≈ 315,576 hours
Common Use Cases
- Retirement eligibility (pension ages vary by country)
- Paediatric dosing (exact age matters for medications)
- Legal drinking/driving age verification
- Visa applications requiring exact age
- Milestone birthday planning (18, 21, 30, 40, 50, 60)

How Age Calculation Works
Age in complete years is the number of times your birthday has occurred on or before the reference date. The calculation subtracts year, then checks whether the birth month/day has occurred yet in the reference year — if not, subtract one year. Days and months are computed from the remaining difference. The tricky case is leap-year birthdays (February 29): in most countries, the birthday is legally treated as March 1 in non-leap years.
Exact age in days accounts for leap years (366 days instead of 365 every 4 years, except century years not divisible by 400). Age in weeks, hours, and minutes can be derived from total days. Different cultures count age differently: East Asian age reckoning traditionally counts the year of birth as age 1, making a person "1 year old" at birth and adding 1 each Lunar New Year (Korea officially switched to Western reckoning in 2023).
Common Mistakes
- Off-by-one on birthdays: On your birthday, you turn the new age — not the day before. An age calculator should use ≥ (not >) comparison when checking if the birthday has passed in the current year.
- Ignoring time zones: For precise age in hours, the birth time zone matters. A person born at 11 PM EST on December 31 was born on January 1 UTC — a full day's difference in some legal contexts.
- Leap year edge cases: February 29 birthdays occur only every 4 years. Whether a person born on Feb 29 turns a given age on Feb 28 or March 1 in non-leap years depends on jurisdiction.
Frequently Asked Questions
Chronological age is years since birth. Biological age reflects the physiological state of cells and organs — measured by biomarkers like telomere length, DNA methylation (epigenetic clocks), and organ function tests. Biological age can differ from chronological age by 10–15 years depending on lifestyle, genetics, and environment. Functional age measures practical capability — how well someone performs cognitive and physical tasks typical for their age group.
Age is used in alcohol purchase laws (18 or 21), driving eligibility, voting rights, retirement benefits eligibility, and pension calculations. Insurance premiums are often calculated on "age nearest birthday" (rounds to nearest year) or "age last birthday" (always rounds down) — a distinction that can change premium bands. Medicare eligibility in the US triggers on the exact day of turning 65.
Multiply years by 365.25 (accounting for leap years) as a quick estimate, then add the extra days in the current year. More accurately: count the actual days using a date difference calculator, which properly handles all leap years in between. The average person at age 40 has lived approximately 14,610 days; at 70, approximately 25,568 days.
