US Sales Tax: Adding and Removing It from Prices
Unlike VAT (which is included in displayed prices across Europe), US sales tax is almost always added at the point of sale — the shelf price is pre-tax. This means you pay more at the register than the sticker price, and the exact amount depends on your state and sometimes county or city.
Adding Sales Tax
Total = Price × (1 + tax rate)
Example at 8.25%: $49.99 × 1.0825 = $54.12
Tax amount = $54.12 − $49.99 = $4.13
Removing Sales Tax (Reverse)
Pre-tax price = Total ÷ (1 + tax rate)
Example: $54.12 with 8.25% → $54.12 ÷ 1.0825 = $49.99
