How PDF → DOCX conversion works

PDF stores content as a fixed-layout document using positioned text objects, font references, and embedded images. DOCX stores content as reflowable paragraphs with style-based formatting. This tool parses the PDF to extract text in reading order, identifies font data and layout coordinates, and maps text to Word paragraph and table structures. Images are embedded at their extracted resolution. The fidelity of the conversion depends heavily on how the original PDF was created: PDFs exported from Word convert with high fidelity; PDFs generated from InDesign or complex layout tools convert with moderate fidelity; scanned PDFs (image-only, no text layer) require OCR and convert with lower fidelity — Pro tier includes OCR.

Limitations

Complex layouts may shift — multi-column designs rarely reproduce exactly in DOCX.
Custom fonts may be substituted with system fonts if not embedded in the PDF.
Tables in PDFs are reconstructed from coordinates and spacing — complex tables often require manual correction.
Scanned PDFs (image-only) cannot be extracted without OCR. Pro tier handles OCR; free tier handles text-based PDFs only.
